Why I Deliberately Limit Client Numbers as an Online Personal Trainer
Why I Deliberately Limit Client Numbers as an Online Personal Trainer
In an Industry Obsessed With Growth, I’ve Chosen a Different Path
Spend five minutes on social media and you’ll see online personal trainers talking about scaling their businesses, managing hundreds of clients and building large online communities. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s never been the approach I’ve chosen for David Todd Fitness.
There’s nothing wrong with that.
But it’s never been what I wanted for David Todd Fitness.
In fact, one of the reasons many of my clients stay with me for years is because I deliberately keep the number of people I work with relatively small.
That might sound like a strange business decision.
Surely more clients means more success?
Not necessarily.
For me, success isn’t about how many people I coach.
It’s about how well I coach them.
Having worked as an online personal trainer for many years, I’ve seen first-hand that sustainable results come from consistency rather than extremes.
Coaching Should Be Personal
When someone joins one of my coaching programmes, they’re not becoming a number on a spreadsheet.
They’re trusting me with an important part of their life.
Their health.
Their confidence.
Their mobility.
Their strength.
Their ability to keep doing the things they love as they get older.
That responsibility matters.
To do my job properly, I need to know my clients.
I need to understand their goals, their injuries, their lifestyle, their work commitments, and sometimes even what’s happening in their family life.
Fitness doesn’t happen in isolation.
Real coaching means understanding the whole person.
For those wanting even greater support, my VIP Personal Training Membership includes weekly one-to-one coaching sessions tailored entirely to the individual.
Why Bigger Isn’t Always Better
Many online coaching businesses rely on large client numbers.
To make that work, systems become more automated.
Programmes become more standardised.
Communication often becomes less personal.
Again, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that approach.
It’s simply not the way I choose to work.
I prefer to know exactly who my clients are.
I want to know when they’ve had a difficult week at work.
I want to know when they’re struggling with motivation.
I want to know when they’re celebrating a personal win that has nothing to do with the scales.
Because those details matter.
And those details help create long-term success.
The Metric I’m Most Proud Of
If I wanted to impress people on social media, I could talk about client numbers.
Instead, I prefer talking about something else.
Client retention.
Several of my clients have been training with me for many years.
Some for more than a decade.
In an industry built around quick fixes and short-term transformations, I believe that’s one of the strongest indicators that a coaching relationship is working.
People don’t stay with a coach for years because of a clever marketing funnel.
They stay because they’re getting value.
They trust the process.
And they enjoy the journey.
Fitness Isn’t Just About 12 Weeks
One of the biggest problems in the fitness industry is the obsession with short-term results.
Everything is focused on the next 6 weeks.
The next 8 weeks.
The next 12 weeks.
But what happens after that?
The reality is that health and fitness are lifelong pursuits.
The goal isn’t simply to lose weight before a holiday.
It’s to stay active, capable and healthy for decades.
That’s why my coaching focuses on sustainable habits rather than extreme approaches.
I want my clients to be successful not just next month, but next year and beyond. That’s also the philosophy behind Rebuild & Rise 84, my progressive fitness programme designed to help people build strength, confidence and consistency over time.
The Kind of Online Personal Trainer I Aim to Be
I believe in coaching that is:
- Personal
- Supportive
- Sustainable
- Realistic
- Adaptable
I believe in building strength without punishment.
Improving fitness without extremes.
Creating habits that fit into real life.
Most importantly, I believe that every client deserves to feel seen, heard and supported.
That’s much easier to achieve when coaching remains personal.
This approach is at the heart of my Active+ Membership, where members receive structured training plans, accountability and ongoing support designed to fit around real life.
